More about the book

Recent advances in thermoregulation have significantly enhanced our understanding of various aspects, particularly Fever, which is now recognized as part of the Acute Phase of the Immune Response rather than merely a rise in body temperature due to infection. The classification of Cytokines and the availability of recombinant materials have further propelled this research. Additionally, insights into the Hypothalamo-Pituitary Adrenal Axis have transformed our perspective on temperature regulation. The challenges posed by adverse climatic conditions, as well as issues faced by neonates and hibernators, are also critical areas of study. Biochemically, our grasp of heat production control and the function of brown adipose tissue is rapidly evolving. These topics were explored at the 'Thermal Physiology 1993' Symposium in Aberdeen, Scotland, organized by the Thermal Physiology Commission of the International Union of Physiological Sciences. The book encompasses six key areas of temperature regulation: Fever (including the Acute Phase of the Immune Response and Thermoregulatory Peptides), Neurophysiology of Thermoregulation, Neonatal Thermoregulation, Mechanisms of Heat Production, Ecological and Behavioural Thermoregulation, and Emerging Themes in Thermoregulation.
