More about the book

This volume presents the proceedings from the “Second International Workshop on Cooperative Buildings (CoBuild’99),” held at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh on October 1–2, 1999. Following the success of the inaugural workshop in Darmstadt in February 1998, which highlighted the need for a platform to discuss the intersection of information technology, organizational innovation, and architecture, a follow-up event was organized. The choice of location for CoBuild’99 was influenced by the high-quality contributions from the U.S. at the previous workshop, prompting the decision to host the second event in the U.S. to engage a broader audience and establish an international series of workshops. Carnegie Mellon University was a natural choice for hosting, leading to the selection of Volker Hartkopf from the Department of Architecture and Jane Siegel from the Human Computer Interaction Institute as conference cochairs. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD), specifically the Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute (IPSI) in Darmstadt, ensuring continuity between the two events.
