Studies in the archaeology of the Sultanate of Oman

Der Band vereint fünf Beiträge, die über Ausgrabungen berichten, welche das Department of Antiquities des Sultanates Oman und die Deutsche Archäologische Oman Expedition mit Unterstützung des Deutschen Bergbaumuseums Bochum in den 70er und 80er Jahren durchführten. Es handelt sich um Untersuchungen in der Gegend von Muskat [P. M. Costa/P. Yule/G. Weisgerber/M. Kunter/Ali b. Ahmad b. Bakhit al Shanfari], ein prähistorisches Grabinventar von Aztah [P. Yule], einen Vorbericht über die Grabungssaison 1996 der Oman Grabungen [P. Yule/G. Weisgerber], späteisenzeitliche Gräberfelder von Amla/al Zahirah [P. Yule] und Grabfunde im Osten von Ibra [P. Yule/C. Bergoffen]. Im Hauptteil zu den Grabungen in der Gegend von Muskat werden Ökologie und Kultur des Wadi Bawshar diskutiert und ein Katalog der Gräber und Funde, darunter ein sog. früheisenzeitlicher „Bienenwaben“-Friedhof, vorgelegt [ca. 600 v. Chr. bis 0]. Es folgen Erörterungen der Chronologie, Grabbräuche, vorislamischen Grabarchitektur und anthropologischen Befunde. Außerdem liegen ein Restaurierungsbericht, das Molluskenmaterial und weitere Gräber vor. The volume combines five articles reporting on the excavations conducted by the Department of Antiquities of the Sultanate Oman and the German Archaeological Oman Expedition sponsored by the German Mining Museum Bochum in the 1970s and 1980s. The papers deal with investigations in the area of Muscat [P. M. Costa/P. Yule/G. Weisgerber/M. Kunter/Ali b. Ahmad b. Bakhit al Shanfari], a prehistoric grave inventory from Aztah [P. Yule], a preliminary report on the 1996 season of excavation in Oman [P. Yule/G. Weisgerber], Late Iron Age cemeteries at Amla/al Zahirah [P. Yule] and grave finds from east of Ibra [P. Yule/C. Bergoffen]. In the main part of the book dealing with the excavations around Muscat the ecology and culture of Wadi Bawshar are discussed and a catalogue of graves and finds, amongst them a so-called „honeycomb cemetery“ of the Early Iron Age, is presented [ca. 600 B. C. to the beginning of our era]. This is followed by considerations of the chronology, the burial customs, the pre-Islamic grave architecture, and anthropological analyses. The section concludes with a restoration report, the molluscan finds and some other burials.
