Die materielle Kultur der Spätantike in den Ostalpen

More about the book

The Hemmaberg, in the south-east of Austria, saw in late antiquity the development of the largest early- Christian centre of pilgrimage in the Alps. The findings at this location are used as the basis in the present study for a discussion of the general characteristics of the material culture of late antiquity in the eastern Alps from the 4th to the 7th century. A first section discusses selected types of finds, which are of significance for the absolute chronological classification and for the characterisation of settlements. A focus is on a numismatic analysis of the circulation of coins from the 3rd to the 5th century, which is tied to a discussion on the problem of the hoard finds which can be dated to the middle of the third century. A second section presents contextualised informative groups of finds relevant for chronology from the western twin-church building on the Hemmaberg.
