More about the book

The ICES 2001 Conference Committee is pleased to present the proceedings from the fourth International Conference on Evolvable Systems, held in Tokyo, Japan, from October 3-5, 2001. This event focused on the latest advancements and challenges in the field of evolvable systems. The concept of evolving machines, rooted in the cybernetics movement of the 1940s and 1950s, has recently gained traction through the emergence of bio-inspired systems and evolvable hardware. Following the workshop "Towards Evolvable Hardware" in Lausanne in 1995, the first conference took place in Tsukuba, Japan, in 1996. Subsequent conferences were held in Lausanne in 1998 and Edinburgh in 2000. ICES 2001 aimed to promote and advance all aspects of evolvable systems, encompassing hardware, software, algorithms, and applications. By uniting researchers who apply biologically inspired concepts to create real systems in artificial intelligence, artificial life, robotics, VLSI design, and related fields, the conference fostered collaboration within this growing community.
