More about the book
This special volume is dedicated to Professor Wolf-Dieter Deckwer on his 60th birthday. It features a collection of 11 outstanding review articles primarily authored by his former students, associates, colleagues, and friends. The title reflects Deckwer's research interests and scientific pursuits over more than 20 years in biochemical engineering, particularly during his leadership of the Biochemical Engineering Division at GBF (German National Research Center for Biotechnology). He has significantly advanced the development of both "software tools," including analytical methods and mathematical models for monitoring cellular processes, and "hardware tools," such as computer control systems and bioreactors for producing a variety of bioproducts at semi-production scale. The volume reviews new developments in these crucial tools in biochemical engineering. Deckwer was a pioneer in emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to bioprocess development. By establishing "Integrated Bioprocess Development" as a key research focus at GBF in 1990, he actively promoted this concept, contributing to the field's evolution.
