More about the book

The design of complex artifacts and systems necessitates collaboration among multidisciplinary design teams utilizing various advanced engineering tools, including CAD, modeling, simulation, optimization software, engineering databases, and knowledge-based systems. Team members often work independently and in parallel, using different tools across various locations, which can lead to discrepancies in design versions and perspectives. To address these challenges, efficient computer-supported collaborative design systems are essential. These systems should not only automate tasks like traditional computer-aided engineering tools but also facilitate information sharing, collaboration, and coordination among team members throughout the design process. The foundation for this approach was laid through international collaboration between the University of Technology of Compiègne in France and the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the early 1990s. This partnership led to a series of international workshops on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) in Design starting in 1996. To organize these workshops effectively, an International Working Group on CSCW in Design (CSCWD) was established, and an International Steering Committee was formed in 1998. The initiative evolved into international conferences in 2000, building on the success of the earlier workshops.
