More about the book
Latest research shows that contrary to assumptions the meaning of kinship that was believed to have declined since the middle ages and replaced by institutions is still of utmost importance: for social networks, in difficult and new situations, flow of material resources as well as for the achievement of social and political positions. Kinship also becomes increasingly important on the marriage market. This phenomena that became predominant in the late 18th century points towards a conceptual loss in meaning of kinship – in the sense of being freed of taboos - and an increase in meaning with regard to ‘usage’. This could be of existential meaning but can also cause conflict, dependence and obligations.
