Thermal forming

More about the book

Thermal forming is a manufacturing technique that modifies component shapes using thermal strains from localized temperature fields. This method is applicable for bending and forming complex structures from various materials, compensating for distortions post-welding, and adjusting micro-devices. Its applications range from shipbuilding to microelectronics. Although flame straightening has a long history in shipbuilding, thermal forming has remained a niche technology due to its complex processes. Recent advancements in research have improved understanding, enabling broader application in diverse manufacturing settings and making it suitable for flexible mass production. Experts in thermal strain gathered in Bremen for the inaugural international workshop on thermal forming, discussing current research and future trends. The workshop focused on understanding forming mechanisms using different heat sources, predicting thermal strains and geometries, and optimizing processing strategies. It aimed to foster international experience exchange and enhance dialogue between science and industry. Participants explored the latest research, including experimental studies, process modeling, and advanced simulation techniques for accurate predictions. Sponsored by CIRP and DVS and hosted by BIAS, the workshop showcased over 20 papers contributed by presenters and co-authors, with special thanks to those who organized and supported the even
