More about the book

The increasing relevance of European law impacts not only states in Europe but primarily its citizens. Their rights are safeguarded by the European Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. This textbook aims to clarify and integrate these rights into a coherent system. It addresses the relevant laws of the European Union and the European Community, alongside the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which is gaining significance. Additionally, it considers the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the Union, part of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. Although the Charter is not legally binding until ratified by all EU Member States, Community Courts reference it as a reflection of the constitutional traditions shared by Member States. Thus, it is plausible that the Charter could be incorporated into existing Treaties, regardless of future constitutional developments within the EU. The book also anticipates the inclusion of Protocols to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms that have yet to enter into force, providing a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of European citizens' rights.
