More about the book

We are pleased to welcome you to the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Semantic and Digital Media Technologies held in Koblenz, Germany. The SAMT agenda unites researchers from both ends of the semantic multimedia spectrum. On one side, the Semantic Web and its technologies are gaining traction in open data environments and specialized fields like corporate intranet search, e-Science (especially in life sciences), and cultural heritage. To enhance global media sharing, W3C is creating standards for denoting audio/visual content fragments and associating semantics with them. On the other side, media analysis tools are advancing, identifying features that can be linked to explicit semantics, whether expressed formally or informally, in proprietary formats or open standards. Recent advancements in these areas highlight the importance of bridging the semantic gap to support real applications. This conference also aims to connect different research cultures and methodologies at both ends of the spectrum. Selected papers demonstrate that SAMT attracts media analysis researchers who recognize the benefits of explicit semantics, as well as knowledge engineering experts who understand the potential of extracting countless concepts from visual data.
