More about the book
The final volume on early finds from Burghöfe presents 1,148 illustrated pieces, following earlier works on figural bronzes, jewelry, and fibulae. Despite being stray finds without stratigraphical context, their quantity and quality far exceed those from the 2001-2007 excavations. Some objects may date to the pre-Claudian period, but definitive evidence for Augustan use remains unconfirmed. Most artifacts belong to the Tiberian-Neronian period, with parallels found in the legionary fortress at Vindonissa, established under Tiberius. Military artifacts indicate the presence of cavalry, likely from an unnamed Cohors quingenaria equitata, alongside legionaries. The garrison's withdrawal likely occurred in the late 1st or early 2nd century A.D. Additionally, a group of 80 finds from the late 2nd and 3rd centuries suggests possible renewed occupation before the construction of the Late Antique fort on the adjacent spur.
