Importantly, they did not initiate the piratical conquests along the eastern seacoasts; prior to their emergence, skilled pirates had already established their dominance in the Caribbean. To grasp the historical context of piracy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it is crucial to examine the earliest notable pirates of the West Indies.
