Thomas Scheibitz, der ungefegte Raum

More about the book

Thomas Scheibitz, a painter, sculptor, and passionate bookmaker, uses this exhibition in Innsbruck as a platform to showcase his new, mostly unpublished works. The title "Der ungefegte Raum" references the ancient tradition of trompe l’oeil painting and the Greek mosaic artist Sosos of Pergamon from the 2nd century BC. Sosos is known for his innovative approach to decorating mosaic floors with food remnants, creating the effect of leftovers from a sumptuous feast, encapsulated in the concept of "The Unswept Floor." This mosaic serves as the foundational motif for the artist's book. Within its pages, Scheibitz metaphorically explores his range of inquiries, navigating themes of illusionism, mimesis, and interpretative openness. He sharpens his formally rigorous visual universe by employing linguistic and pictorial fragments, alongside expansive associative frameworks, to critically interrogate artistic conventions. The book invites readers to engage with the complexities of his artistic vision, blending traditional influences with contemporary interpretations.
