Diatomeen im Süßwasser-Benthos von Mitteleuropa

More about the book

This second edition serves as a corrected version of the first, aimed at aiding the identification of taxa in applied hydrobiology, particularly for water monitoring in line with the EU Water Framework Directive. It presents a condensed and updated freshwater diatom flora of Central Europe, focusing on diatoms that are frequent or abundant in the region, while excluding planktonic, halobious, and rare taxa. The book features 793 photographically documented taxa, representing over 50% of the benthic freshwater diatom flora. It provides short diagnoses for 707 taxa, along with ecological features and comparable taxa, supported by literature references. Two general identification keys for approximately 100 genera and 18 species tables are included. Based on around 11,000 evaluated samples from various water types, preferences for over 500 taxa are indicated, detailing their occurrence and absence in specific water types. The classification of the 'red list' of diatom taxa for Germany is also included. The text critically discusses new or resurrected generic entities and maintains continuity in taxonomy since 1990. While halobious taxa are not the focus, level keys for species-rich genera are provided. Attention is given to biogeography, hydrogeology, and typology, along with a glossary and an index of 1589 taxa, names, and synonyms.
