More about the book

The Frankfurt East Asian Studies Series, co-published by the Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt and Iudicium, invites interdisciplinary research on modern cultures and societies of East and Southeast Asia within historical contexts. With a multi-disciplinary perspective, the series accommodates a variety of research methods, including philological, historical, cultural, social sciences, law, and economics. Recently, China has experienced a dramatic resurgence of religiosity, with once-forgotten traditions reviving and new religious movements gaining traction. Christian churches are also attracting more followers, both in their officially recognized forms and through non-institutional underground and house churches. This volume, based on a lecture series organized by the Department of Intercultural Theology and the Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies at Goethe University, examines these phenomena and offers an initial assessment. It aims to contextualize current developments within a historical framework essential for understanding religion and societal change in contemporary China.
