Metropole: Stadt neu bauen

More about the book

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) The Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA Hamburg) is dedicated to designing the future of cities in the twenty-first century, addressing contemporary metropolitan development challenges through innovative and sustainable projects. Until 2013, IBA Hamburg showcases over sixty building, social, and cultural initiatives in Hamburg, focusing on ecologically and socially balanced growth. Spanning 35 square kilometres, the project site includes the Elbe Islands of Wilhelmsburg and Veddel, as well as the Harburg upriver port, serving as a model for sustainable inner city development. These areas are home to approximately 55,000 residents from over 100 countries. This seventh volume in the METROPOLIS: series offers an annotated overview of the projects, organized around three themes: Cosmopolis, Metrozones, and Cities and Climate Change. Upholding the quality associated with the “IBA brand,” this volume presents an innovative review of planning and construction, alongside reflections on the seven-year development process. Additionally, it acknowledges the vital contributions of participants in the IBA Hamburg's success. Looking forward, it also begins to explore the question of future directions, providing initial insights into the path ahead.
