Wissenstransfer und Translation

More about the book

In a time in which machine and computer-aided translation develop rapidly and – far from being merely an indispensable aid for them– are even threatening to replace human translators, it becomes necessary to focus on the humanum in translation and to become aware of the pluridimensionality of the phenomenon translatio – translation. This third volume of the Hermeneutik und Kreativität (“hermeneutics and creativity”) series presents only a few, but nevertheless fundamental approaches and opens them up for discussion. The contributions are divided into three sections, which reflect the aims of the book: discussing 1) the relation between translation, translatio studii and cross-language comparison, 2) the translator caught between hermeneutics and creativity and 3) language as the means of translation and thus as a catalyst for linguistically oriented translation studies. Hence translation can be considered as the transfer of language, culture and knowledge. These levels of culture in the broadest sense and their implications are highly diverse; however they can be grasped in their totality by human creativity. The selected topics are based on major research activities which the authors – mostly young translation scholars, historians and philologists - are currently working on. This gives us hope that translation studies will expand and strengthen its anthropological/ hermeneutical dimension.
