This commemorative publication was presented to Jürgen Backhaus on July 10, 2015, in honor of his final lecture at Erfurt University’s Department of the Sciences of the State. Since 2001, he served as a full professor for Public Finance and Fiscal Sociology, supported by the Alfred Krupp von Bohlen- und Halbach-Foundation. Following a stroke in September 2014, he was compelled to retire early, which limited the time for compiling this Festschrift. The diverse contributions reflect his esteem and popularity among colleagues. The articles showcase key aspects of Backhaus's teaching and research. Some focus on the history of economic ideas, while others explore finance and fiscal sociology, with many incorporating contemporary references. Additionally, two articles critique the current university educational system, a subject on which Backhaus expressed skepticism. Two contributions take a more econometric and experimental approach, highlighting the breadth of scholarly engagement inspired by his work. This volume serves as a testament to his influence and legacy in the field.
