More about the book
In Jia’s The Chinese Version, arrangements of characters are according to formal, not semantic, criteria. Each character therefore may retain its individual meaning, but not as a syntagm of a sentence. These works juxtapose simplified characters with the “lost” characters excluded by official general publication guidelines. By their very presence in these paintings, these “illegal” characters constitute a further repudiation of state policies of cultural degradation.
