Control and model-based analysis of microaerobic processes

More about the book

Studying bacterial growth under microaerobic conditions presents unique biotechnological challenges, particularly due to the difficulty of measuring very low oxygen concentrations with conventional sensors. As a result, these processes remain underexplored in both research and industrial contexts, despite their significance. This work develops strategies for analyzing and controlling microaerobic processes by integrating systems biology, mathematical modeling, bioengineering, and control engineering. The focus is on the anoxygenic photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum, which has notable biotechnological potential due to its ability to produce various biological products under microaerobic conditions. Experimental results indicate that the proposed strategies establish a platform for systematically addressing complex biological challenges. The contributions of this work are threefold: it introduces innovative process control strategies that serve as valuable tools for studying microaerobic regulatory mechanisms; it provides experimental data that enhance understanding of Rhodospirillum rubrum's microaerobic lifestyle; and it offers process control strategies applicable to both research and industrial applications involving microaerobic regimes across all respiratory organisms.
