More about the book
The research project „Edition of the Hieroglyphic Temple Inscriptions of Philae“ by the Austrian Academy of Sciences aims to produce a comprehensive edition of the scenes and inscriptions from all temples on Philae island. Initiated by Hermann Junker with the volume on the Great Pylon of the Temple of Isis, the project has continued with subsequent works, including one by Junker and Erich Winter. The upcoming volume, Philae III, focuses on the Second East Colonnade, featuring the “Room of Tiberius,” situated opposite the birth house in the Festival Court. The colonnade's decoration, spanning from the reign of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II to Tiberius, includes four chambers: the “Laboratory,” “Room of the Judges,” “Morning House,” and “Library.” This volume is vital for enhancing our understanding of Philae's theology. It consists of two parts: the first offers a richly annotated transliteration and translation of the hieroglyphic texts, while the second features line drawings of all scenes and inscriptions. Philae III encompasses over 150 ritual scenes and inscriptions, including a recipe for incense Kyphi, invocations of doorkeepers, praises of Philae, texts related to door bolts, and a reused block of Ptolemy VI Philometor found at the colonnade's north entrance.
