Towards Sustainable Land Use

Furthering Cooperation Between People and Institutions Volume I and II

More about the book

This publication features a variety of successful, practical, and innovative solutions for sustainable land use, including methods to improve soil quality in degraded areas and measures for soil protection. It aims to reinforce the international community's commitment to enhancing land quality through supportive programs. National and sub-national governments are encouraged to conduct financial and economic baseline studies on the impacts of ongoing degradation, using the findings to inform policy responses that support extension services, research, marketing facilities, and related sectors like healthcare and education. Transboundary eco-regional land conservation and watershed development can be advanced through international conventions and regional frameworks. The principle of "prevention" should guide soil conservation policies, as "rehabilitation" is often challenging or unfeasible once degradation occurs. Globally, the successes in combating soil degradation have been overshadowed by ongoing declines in soil quality elsewhere. Thus, it is crucial to intensify efforts to implement sustainable land management practices tailored to specific sites, while also improving the dissemination of knowledge about responsible land management to users and the wider population.
