More about the book

In the foyer of Villa Merkel stands a striking seven-meter sculpture by JAK, featuring a tree trunk supported by bright green epoxy resin and floating porcelain objects. This artwork sets the stage for JAK's ongoing film project, SOUL BLINDNESS, which has been in development since 2013. Unlike traditional film projects, JAK's approach involves a continuous evolution of the screenplay through various media, including drawing, text, video, sound, sculpture, painting, and installation. The film explores the main character's experience with agnosia, a psychological condition known as "soul blindness," where objects cannot be distinctly identified. Intriguingly, the boundaries between JAK as the artist and the concept of agnosia blur, creating a complex interplay where anonymity and illusion coexist. Everyday actions from the screenplay are transformed into stage sets, further enriching the narrative. Prior to this ambitious project, JAK held three solo exhibitions in Stuttgart, Taipei, and Leonberg. The exhibition at Villa Merkel, which opened in March 2017, showcases JAK's multifaceted work while deliberately withholding information about the artist's identity, adding an air of mystery to the experience.
