Performative Topologies for Musical Expression

More about the book

This work introduces the artistic performance project Homo Restis and the modular interface system developed for it. Collaborating with Jens Vetter and visual artist Sarah Leimcke, the costume sound performance evolved during my studies at Interface Culture at the University of Art and Design in Linz and was showcased at various festivals. The interface system utilizes string-based distance sensors, integrating real-time sound synthesis in portable sound boxes with a mobile, radio-controlled multi-channel audio system. To contextualize Homo Restis, I explore the precursors and history of performance art and public space, alongside new technological advancements and concepts for musical expression through innovative interfaces. The study emphasizes topology, a construct from geography, mathematics, and philosophy, to detail the interaction modes of traditional string instruments and new interfaces. Additionally, I examine concepts such as Heterotopia, Constructive Modularity, and Self-Empowerment in relation to these musical interfaces. The main section focuses on Homo Restis, detailing previous artistic projects, the project's evolution, the technical development of the interface system, and insights into our performance practice.
