This dissertation covers two different areas of investigation, which are rare-earth metal(III) oxoselenates(IV) and ultra-thin layered selenides. Subsequently, phase-pure new or related structures of rare-earth metal oxide chloride selenites were successfully synthesized and compared with the existing compounds, which were reproduced and optimized in this work. Furthermore, the bandgap-tunable and monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides were successfully synthesized with a controllable chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Third, new ultra-thin SnSe and SnSe2 flakes were obtained with the CVD method as well and related electrical and electrochemical applications were demonstrated. This project was completed in cooperation with the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.
