Strategic alliances have become crucial in firms' strategies, leading to a surge in research focused on their various forms, purposes, and management. However, many contributions addressing alliance governance remain vague and selective regarding governance structures and the factors influencing their effectiveness. This book aims to enhance understanding of alliance governance and offers recommendations for its design. Adopting a configurational approach, the author develops a comprehensive model of alliance governance systems, identifying key structural and instrumental design parameters. The analysis includes major contingency factors such as member firms' cultures, alliance experience, the number of partners, and trust, all of which affect the suitability of design parameters. Ultimately, five configurations, or ideal types, of alliance governance systems are proposed, serving as blueprints for practitioners and a foundation for further scholarly research. The intended audience includes scholars in strategic management and organization theory, interested students, and practitioners engaged in formulating and implementing alliance strategies.
