Education, science and cooperation for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation

More about the book

The German Alumni Summer School 2018 focused on education, science, and cooperation among German Alumni for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Organized by various academic institutions, the event was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and aimed at German Alumni and experts from diverse fields. In response to mass migration from Sub-Saharan Africa, the European Union is developing a new political and economic strategy for the region, while the German Government has proposed enhanced cooperation in education, trade, business development, and energy. The goal is to mitigate climate change impacts, prevent climate refugees, and secure a future for Africa’s youth, reflecting Germany's development policy towards African nations. Sub-Saharan Africa, with its 49 states, faces rapid population growth, projected to triple by the century's end. Economic growth has declined significantly, and the continent remains the poorest globally, with widespread poverty leading to malnutrition and health issues. Climate change, land grabbing, and crises like famine exacerbate these challenges. Additionally, corruption, conflict, and unstable governance contribute to the region's instability. Biodiversity loss and threats to wildlife from habitat destruction and poaching further underscore the urgent need for action.
