More about the book

Where are all the women in the avant-garde electronic music scene? Contrary to the belief that they do not exist, research on female electronic musicians has been scarce. In the late 1990s, Elisabeth Schimana began her exploration into this overlooked world, leading to her performance Portrait 01 – Die Futuristin. This journey into electronic music culminated in the establishment of the IMA – Institute for Media Archaeology. The publication highlights the work of twenty female artists, presenting a different narrative about the creation and evolution of electronic music. This illustrated volume offers an intriguing and significant portrait of a new history. Schimana, a pioneer in electronic music and founder of the IMA, has focused since 2005 on acoustic media—both analogue and digital—while exploring the intersections of women, art, and technology. The work sheds light on the contributions of women in a field often perceived as male-dominated, showcasing their creativity and influence. This initiative not only celebrates these artists but also challenges the prevailing narratives surrounding electronic music. The festival at Lentos Kunstmuseum in Linz from September 6 to 30, 2018, further emphasizes this important dialogue.
