The book examines the use of mystical imagery in the literary works of the 16th-century Spanish writers and mystics, Santa Teresa de Jesús and San Juan de la Cruz. In addition to the variety of sources on which they draw and the influence they exercise on later generations, what emerges in the study is a multivalent use of diverse images that is the mystics' means of grappling with the ineffable nature of mystical union.
