GIS for Environmental Monitoring is a gentle but thorough introduction to those fields of which a basic understanding is a must for using, designing, and understanding geoinformation systems. These include introductions to reference systems, surveying and its techniques, cartography, digital imaging, data quality assessment. On that base, data processing and information extraction methods employed in GIS systems are discussed. In the last part of the book, actual GIS applications in environmental monitoring are presented. The book consists of four parts: Introduction, information sources and data, data processing and information extraction, GIS applications for environmental monitoring. The individual chapters are organized in such a manner that they may be read independently. Each chapter concludes with exercises for students to control their progress. GIS for Environmental Monitoring evolved from a cooperative EC-Tempus project of the Universities of Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, Delft and Budapest. Audience: GIS for Erwironmental Monitoring addresses all users of geographical inforrnation systems and related techniques, that is engineers, geoscientists, surveyors, civil engineers, hydrologists as well as students of these fields.
