Enterprise restructuring has evolved into a continuous process rather than a temporary crisis for many organizations and sectors. Unfortunately, these restructuring efforts often fail to achieve their goals of securing or enhancing profitability and can jeopardize the physical and psycho-social health of all employees. Increased sick leave and presenteeism among workers can significantly impair organizational performance. Restructuring acts as both an individual and organizational stressor, leading to chronic health issues for laid-off workers and those who remain. To mitigate the risks associated with restructuring, collaboration among various stakeholders—individuals, enterprises, and society—is essential to implement healthier change procedures and support affected workers during transitions. The European Expert Group on Health in Restructuring (HIRES), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Thomas Kieselbach from the University of Bremen and supported by the European Commission's DG Employment, provides a comprehensive overview of the impacts of restructuring and suggests frameworks for "healthier restructuring." The findings are based on interdisciplinary expertise from 15 European partners and 12 external experts.
