The catalogue Duits Expressionisme 1905-1913 presents 150 pieces, among them paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by the Brücke members Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, Fritz Bleyl, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde, Cuno Amiet and Otto Mueller. A gift by Karl Schmidt-Rotluff in 1964 started the foundation of the collection and the Brücke Museum. The selection shows landscape depictions, acts in nature and studio, as well as portraits and still lifes, in all of which the artists; search for the elemental is articulated in radiant colours and raw forms. The rise of the Brücke movement announced the beginning of classsical modernism in Germany, the ideas and aesthetic ideals of which continue to play a powerful and crucial role in the visual arts. The catalogue treats the artists of the Brücke movement, and beyond, in seperate chapters, ordered according to the time their involvement in the movement became most noticeable.
