Data-transmitting textile fibre ropes for firefighting applications

More about the book

Firefighting is a dangerous profession that remains hazardous despite advancements in technology. Effective communication and situational awareness are vital for the safety and efficiency of firefighting missions. Smart Textiles, which incorporate electronic elements, can enhance the safety of firefighters. A key innovation is the development of a data-transmitting rope known as the “Smart Lifeline.” This lifeline facilitates information exchange between firefighters inside structures and mission commanders outside. It builds on traditional lifelines, which guide firefighters to exits in low-visibility conditions. The thesis details the development of the Smart Lifeline, focusing on integrating data leads into the rope and creating strategies for connecting electronic devices. A structured methodology addresses various requirements, including signal transmission quality, device connectivity, producibility, and protection against heat and water. Following VDI guideline 2221, solutions are developed for each requirement, which are then tested to determine their feasibility. The outcome is a prototype of the Smart Lifeline, featuring multiple signal leads and adaptors for accessing these leads. The thesis concludes with an economic analysis of production costs, utilizing a flexible calculation tool to evaluate the expenses associated with manufacturing braided data lines.
