    More about the book

This publication offers the collected set of papers presented at the Symposium on Health and Mortality organised by the United Nations. The Symposium focused mostly on issues related to the health and mortality of persons aged 15 or over. The sessions of the Symposium were organised along three major issues: the measurement of mortality and health status; the state of current knowledge about the evolution and health in developed market-economy countries, countries with economies in transition, and developing countries; the analysis of risk factors associated with specific behaviours that account for large or growing proportions of deaths. These papers highlight the truly remarkable progress made during the twentieth century in postponing death and increasing the span of healthy life for all the world's inhabitants.
