More about the book
This monograph presents in a first part the growing, the materiality and mediality, the content, the illumination and the intellectual profile of the full corpus of the 104 preserved biblical manuscripts of the Parisian abbey Saint-Victor from a strictly historical standpoint. In a second part each of these manuscripts is described, analyzed and evaluated in detail. With these two steps an important religious institution of the Latin-European High and Late Middle Ages has been characterized for the first time from the standpoint of its complete biblical legacy as a place of scientific, social and religious upheavals in comparison with other religious centres. This publication once again underlines the intellectual fortune and the spirituel depth of this regular canons’ community in medieval Paris on the one hand and its Europe-wide radiation and networking on the other hand, and will thus stimulate our further research agenda in this area.
