Managing resources in next generation broadband

More about the book
Broadband Internet has become an essential element and tool for our modern society. The diffusion of broadband Internet and services has influenced the way, how, when and where we communicate. At the same time, telecommunication networks are undergoing deep changes, not only caused by new entrants and new market (de)regulation, but increasingly by disruptive technological developments. The transition from traditional copper-based access networks to fiber networks with tremendous bandwidth is the most conspicuous example for this transformation also known as “next generation broadband”. Such fundamental changes pose enormous strategic challenges to all players involved: network operators, service providers, regulators, and public at large. The author takes up this complex situation and addresses three specific topics within this field: pricing policies and investment strategies of Internet service providers, virtualization of networks and collaborative strategies, and network neutrality. These three topics are exemplary for the future development of this industry at the crossroad of technology, market strategy, and society. The present research results are very helpful for a better understanding of future telco network infrastructures and their specific economic, political, as well as management challenges. The book is essential reading for researchers and students in the field of infrastructure economics, strategic management, and regulation. Valuable insights are given for professionals and executives concerned with strategic positioning and regulation in network based infrastructures. For politicians, we provide insights on essential regulatory aspects in the transition to next generation broadband.
