More about the book

Pride often precedes a fall, and sometimes that fall is so catastrophic it alters the course of history. Among the immortal Sithi of Osten Ard, the beloved sons of the ruling family, steady Hakatri and his fiery younger brother Ineluki, face a dire fate. Ineluki, who will eventually become the undead Storm King, makes a reckless oath to destroy the terrifying monster Hidohebhi. This vow leads to a disaster that threatens not only their family but all Sithi and potentially humanity. Set a millennium before the events of Williams's The Dragonbone Chair, the story unfolds through the eyes of Pamon Kes, Hakatri's devoted servant and a member of the enslaved Changeling race. Kes's loyalty is put to the test as he confronts the black dragon alongside his master and grapples with the consequences of Ineluki's selfish promise. Their journey takes them across perilous landscapes, where they encounter various mortals and immortals while attempting to reverse the tragedy stemming from Ineluki's fateful decision. This adventure plants the seeds for future conflicts, including the Storm King's War and the Norn Queen Utuk'ku's assault on humanity. Ultimately, Kes must confront his beliefs and risk everything to save Hakatri, questioning whether his efforts can alter the destructive path set in motion by Ineluki's boast.
