More about the book

Liberal education risks diminishing if it fails to communicate its value to society. The liberal arts are struggling because many Americans question their relevance, preferring degrees in engineering or business. Two main concerns persist: first, the personal benefits of a liberal education are less clear to students today; second, many instructors seem more focused on ideological agendas than on demonstrating how liberal arts can contribute to society. This disconnect leads to perceptions of educators as insular rather than as engaged citizens promoting the common good. The liberal arts, at their best, hold immense value for individuals and society as a whole. Historically, figures like the Founding Fathers recognized the importance of integrating practical knowledge with liberal education. For instance, Jefferson viewed a well-rounded individual as someone knowledgeable in both farming and philosophy. This raises the question of why contemporary Americans maintain a rigid divide between theoretical and practical education, and why we struggle to see the liberal arts as essential to civic life. The potential for liberal education to be both useful and enriching remains, but it must be effectively articulated to regain its place in the American educational landscape.
