The Church of England still seemed an essential part of Englishness, and even of the British state, when Mrs Thatcher was elected. More recently, it has lost more than half its members and much of its influence. Yet the English still largely believe in God and most still call themselves Christians. So what went wrong, and how? This book tells the story of the disappearance of the Church of England from the centre of public life. The authors watched this closely, one from the inside and one from the outside. The purpose is to show what happened and explain why.
