More about the book

small pocket Scottish / English & English / Scottish Dictionary Pure delight, especially for the American tourist and other native English speakers. (reminds me of a time years ago traveling in Austria when I was conversing with a young Scottish couple. We were discussing the difference between Scottish and American English - both the accents and the differences in words. At one point, I made the remark, "But if I listen carefully, I am mostly able to understand what you are saying. The young man looked at me, smiled and answered, "Weel, that's cuz we're be-in polite". Later, when I heard just the two of them talking together, I realized they had indeed been being polite to me for I understood almost none what they were saying to each other. Here are a few interesting examples from the Scottish 'B' listings -* child * mountain * building * slow; backward, shy * talk nonsense * cottage * hill * beautiful * bridge * turkey * brook; creek * small barn; cowshed
