More about the book

The Romans saw the strategic value of a settlement in the area around Bishopton, Erskine and Langbank and held the harbour at Langbank from where they could control the Firth of Clyde. Much excavation has taken place over the years in the area, including a substantial Roman fort at Whitemoss farm which dates from 85 A.D. With the advent of the railways in the mid seventeenth century the area became popular with businessmen from Greenock, Paisley and Glasgow and some fine houses were built, many of which remain today. Included in this collection of photographs are some interesting images of Erskine house, originally the residence of Charles Stuart, 12th Lord Blantyre then later the Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers. It is now re-born as the exclusive Mar Hall Hotel.
