More about the book

Southampton is not a city that's renowned for its architectural heritage. Successive waves of redevelopment by the city fathers during the twentieth century, as well as Hitler's high explosive approach to town planning, wrecked much of the visual appeal that this important south coast port used to possess. There are important survivals, of course, amid the character-free flats and retail 'destinations' - the Bargate and Tudor House are just two of the most impressive. Tim Alletson Saunders has spent many months exploring his home town of Southampton, going beyond the obvious and searching out fascinating and unexpected buildings from the past. Not every demolition has been for the he also illustrates the best of the modern city. Through a sequence of past and present photographs, linked by detailed captions, Tim offers an insight into Southampton's past, present and future. Anyone who knows the city will be surprised by his conclusions.
