More about the book
Born into wealth in 1694, Voltaire emerged as a key figure of the Enlightenment, known for his sharp intellect and controversial writings. His satirical critiques of regent Philippe D'Orleans led to exile from Paris and imprisonment in the Bastille. Following his release, he navigated a tumultuous life of fame and scandal, including a love affair that nearly resulted in another imprisonment. To evade this fate, he sought refuge in England in May 1726, remaining in exile for nearly three years.
