Set in late 18th century Strasbourg, the story follows Evchen Humbrecht, who becomes pregnant after being seduced by Officer Groeningseck. Believing he has abandoned her, she leaves home, gives birth, and, in despair, kills her child. The novel adapts Heinrich Leopold Wagner's play "Die Kindermoerderin."
