Nach seiner Emigration 1933 lebte er in den USA, arbeitete u.a. als Sekretär von Thomas Mann und wurde Filmcutter. Seine Essays über Carl Zuckmayer und Bruno Frank bieten tiefgründige Einblicke in ihr Leben und die Epoche, geprägt von humanistischer Bildung und Freundschaft.
