In 1845, a small wagon train hires trapper Stephen Meek to guide them through the Rocky Mountains. Meek claims to know a shortcut but leads them off course into a desolate area, causing distrust among the settlers. When they encounter a Native American, they must choose between him and the unreliable Meek. Kelly Reichardt's film focuses on the journey itself rather than origins or destinations.
