Eagle's father, Heads Off, leads the Elk-dog band, but Eagle must now learn to survive after being thrown from his panicked horse and injuring his leg. Alone in winter without weapons, he finds shelter with a strange old man, who may be a demented outcast or the legendary trickster, influencing Eagle's fate.
