More about the book
Carl Schurz's life is a remarkable tale of activism and public service, beginning with his involvement in the 1848 Revolution in Germany. After escaping to France and rescuing his professor, he immigrated to America in 1852, where he quickly rose in the Republican Party, becoming the head of the Wisconsin delegation at the 1860 National Convention. Schurz served as Minister to Spain and later joined the Union Army as a Major General. Post-war, he was elected Senator from Missouri and became a key figure in the Liberal Republican movement, eventually serving as Secretary of the Interior under President Hayes.
