More about the book

William Congreve's journey from a law student to a celebrated playwright began with his first play, "The Old Bachelor," which debuted in 1693. His brief but impactful career spanned just seven years, during which he produced five successful plays. Beyond theater, Congreve explored librettos, translations of classical works, and poetry, while also engaging in politics, serving as Secretary of the Island of Jamaica. His life was cut short by a carriage accident in 1728, leading to his death in 1729, after which he was interred in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner.
